The Educational Testing Service or ETS is the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization. One of the exams they developed is the Praxis Series which are tests taken by individuals entering the teaching profession. These examinations are given as part of the certification process required by around forty states as well as professional licensing organizations.
There are three kinds of tests in the Praxis Series. One is called the Praxis I or the Pre-professional skills tests and these will measure your basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. In most colleges, Praxis I tests are sometimes used to qualify candidates for entry into a teacher preparation program.
Another cluster of tests is referred to as the Praxis 2 or Subject Assessments which evaluate how well you know the content of the subjects taught to K-12 students as well as general and specific teaching skills. Another family of tests is referred to as Praxis 3 or Teacher Performance Assessments and these include direct observation of a classroom practice by a beginning teacher. Praxis 1 and 2 include multiple choice items as well as essays. Praxis III on the other hand usually involve essays, listening and oral response tasks, and in-class observations.
You can do your best on the Praxis tests by collecting practice materials available for each test, and then coming up with a study plan and adhering to it. There are a lot of Praxis study guides available on the Web as well as in conventional bookstores. You can also go to the ETS website to download review materials. Praxis study guide contain content outlines, information about the kinds of questions you can find in the tests, strategies, and sample questions. You can also find a number of Praxis 1 practice tests out there, as well as those for Praxis 2.
Some of them you can even get for free. The ones you can get from the ETS website are tests which have been administered already. These Praxis 2 and Praxis 1 practice test include correct answers, detailed rationales, as well as scoring instructions. Allow yourself plenty of time to review so you won’t end up cramming before the tests.
